The district of Rulindo has been steadfast in attracting investors especially in the telecommunication sector. For instance in early 2007 the mobile telephone network giant provider (MTN-Rwanda) launched a Frw140 million transmitter in Kinihira Sector to improve its services in the district.The 54-metre-high transmitter has the capacity to accommodate simultaneous calls of about 400 people on the network, according to MTN officials. During the official launch, the Provincial Governor, Boniface Rucagu, hailed MTN for the investment, noting that the network accessibility will greatly improve. “The facility will not only improve telecommunication in the area but also improve the people’s welfare and lifestyle,” Rucagu said, appealing to MTN to invest more in activities that aim at improving people’s welfare. He also asked the giant network provider to look for ways of subsidising mobile telephone handsets for a bigger number of residents to access the telephones and be part of the economic reforms and development in their country. The transmitter is also expected to cover a radius of over 30 kilometres, serving about 12,000 subscribers that are already benefiting from it. MTN is expected to launch about 110 similar sites across the country, as part of a $20 million investment budget for this year. According to the MTN representative in the area, Jean Daniel Rwamakwaya, about 5000 subscribers are expected, with 3000 people working with tea factories in the area and others from Government agencies |
