Authorities in Rwanda’s Northern Province and Rulindo District, working with local residents, have publicly destroyed more than 29,000 litres of substandard beverages as part of efforts to protect public health and combat the production and sale of unsafe drinks.
A total of 26,000 litres of a beverage known as Akarusho, produced by Enterprise Urwibutso in Bushoki Sector, were destroyed in Nyirangarama Cell.
The destruction activity was attended by Governor Mugabowagahunde Maurice, Mayor Mukanyirigira Judith, and members of the Provincial and District Security organ.
Before the beverages were destroyed, authorities explained to residents the health risks associated with producing, selling, distributing and consuming substandard beverages. They urged residents to avoid such products and work closely with authorities to prevent their circulation.
The activity also continued in Buyoga Sector, where Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs,Mutaganda Théophile, led the public destruction of an additional 3,093 litres of substandard beverages.
The seized beverages were valued at approximately Rwf 15.48 million. They had been confiscated from different sectors of Rulindo during an inspection campaign based on a list of substandard beverages published by the Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (Rwanda FDA).
Following the destruction, authorities held community meetings to raise awareness about the dangers of producing, selling, distributing and consuming beverages that do not meet required safety and quality standards.
The District Mayor urged residents to continue reporting suspected cases to authorities, saying timely information can help prevent the circulation of unsafe beverages and protect public health.
The activity highlighted the importance of cooperation between local authorities and communities in the fight against substandard beverages, with the broader goal of protecting the health, safety and well-being of Rulindo residents.
